Trash Containers

Wheels 8 inches in diameter or larger are recommended for trash containers that must roll across parking lots, gravel, cracked asphalt, and uneven loading dock surfaces. Larger wheels roll over surface imperfections more easily, require less pushing force, and are less likely to get stuck in cracks or soft ground. For containers used primarily on smooth indoor floors, 6-inch wheels may be adequate.

Rubber and semi-pneumatic wheels provide the best combination of durability, shock absorption, and rough-surface performance for outdoor trash container applications. They absorb impacts from curbs and potholes, resist cracking from UV exposure, and maintain traction on wet surfaces. Polyolefin wheels are another strong option—they are lighter than rubber, resist chemicals, and do not absorb moisture. Avoid standard polyurethane for heavy outdoor waste applications, as prolonged UV and moisture exposure can cause degradation.

Choose casters with hot-dip galvanized, powder-coated, or stainless steel frames for outdoor waste applications. These finishes resist the corrosion caused by rain, snow, road salt, and waste liquids far better than zinc plating or paint alone. Sealed bearings prevent water and grit from entering the bearing race. Inspect and replace any casters showing visible rust, pitting, or structural corrosion before they fail in service.

Commercial dumpster casters typically need to support 500 to 1,500 lbs per caster depending on the dumpster size and waste type. A standard 2-yard front-load dumpster loaded with general waste weighs approximately 400-800 lbs, but the same container loaded with construction debris or wet organic waste can easily exceed 1,500 lbs. Always calculate load per caster based on the heaviest material the container will hold, with a 30% safety margin to account for impact loading during transport and mechanical handling.
