Heavy-Duty Heat Performance

Steel caster wheels are a heavy-duty metal wheel option that combines high load capacity with excellent resistance to impact damage, heat exposure, and physical abuse. Available in forged and pressed steel configurations, these replacement wheels are a staple in manufacturing facilities, assembly plants, oven rack systems, industrial bakeries, and material handling operations where loads are heavy, temperatures are elevated, and the operating environment is rough on equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Steel Wheels

Forged steel wheels are made from solid steel billets and are denser, heavier, and stronger. Pressed steel wheels are stamped from steel plate and are lighter for their size, making them easier to handle while still supporting heavy loads. Forged wheels are preferred for the most extreme loads and impact conditions. Pressed wheels are suitable for heavy-duty applications where some weight savings are beneficial.

Steel wheels operate continuously at temperatures from 600 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, depending on the specific steel grade. As with all metal wheels, the bearing and lubricant often determine the practical temperature limit rather than the wheel itself.

For loads above 3,000 to 5,000 lbs per wheel, steel is the better choice. Nylon wheels are excellent up to their rated capacity but cannot match the extreme load ratings of steel. Steel also handles high temperatures far beyond nylon's 250-degree limit. However, nylon offers chemical resistance and lower rolling noise that steel cannot provide.

Standard carbon steel wheels will develop surface rust in humid or wet environments. Zinc plating, chrome plating, or other protective finishes are available to reduce corrosion. For highly corrosive environments, stainless steel wheels or polymer alternatives with stainless hardware are better options.

Steel Replacement Wheels: Forged and Pressed for Heavy-Duty Industrial Demands

Forged steel wheels are manufactured from solid steel billets, producing a dense, strong wheel that resists cracking under impact and shock loads. Pressed steel wheels are formed from steel plate and are lighter for their size while still supporting substantial loads, typically from 500 to 5,000 lbs per wheel depending on diameter and construction. Both types operate reliably at temperatures well above what any polymer wheel can tolerate, with continuous ratings typically up to 600 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, making steel wheels practical for carts and racks that pass through curing ovens, paint lines, and heat treatment zones.

Steel's ductility gives it a meaningful advantage over cast iron in applications involving impact loading or rough handling. Where cast iron can crack or fracture under a sudden shock load, steel will deform slightly and absorb the energy without catastrophic failure. Steel replacement wheels are available in standard diameters with roller bearing, plain bore, or high-temperature bushing options to suit a range of speed, load, and temperature requirements.
