Business Machine Casters

Most commercial copiers and multifunction printers use threaded-stem casters with either a 3/8"-16 or 5/16"-18 thread. Some larger floor-standing models use top-plate mounts. Check the equipment's service manual for the exact stem size and length, or measure the existing casters. Choose wheels made from non-marking materials such as gray rubber, polyurethane, or TPR (thermoplastic rubber). These compounds are specifically formulated to avoid leaving black marks on hardwood, vinyl tile, laminate, and polished concrete. Avoid hard nylon or phenolic wheels on finished floors—while they roll easily, they can scratch and dent softer flooring materials.

Commercial copiers typically weigh between 150 and 600 lbs depending on the model and accessories. Server racks can exceed 1,000 lbs. Divide the total equipment weight by the number of casters and add a 20% safety margin. For most office copiers with four casters, models rated at 100-200 lbs per caster are sufficient. Heavier server and network equipment requires higher-rated casters.

Yes. At minimum, two of the casters on any business machine should have brakes. Brakes prevent the equipment from rolling away when staff open drawers, load paper, clear jams, or connect cables. For server racks and network cabinets in data centers, all four casters should have brakes, and many facilities require leveling feet in addition to casters for permanent equipment placement.
