Solid Rubber Wheels

The terms are closely related but have a meaningful distinction. Solid rubber refers specifically to the construction method: a dense, through-and-through rubber body with no hollow core, air pocket, or foam fill. Standard rubber wheels are typically solid rubber wheels made from a general-purpose natural rubber compound. Solid rubber wheels can be made from various rubber types including natural rubber, neoprene, or synthetic blends.

It depends on the specific compound and color. Black solid rubber wheels may leave marks on light-colored or polished floors. Gray or light-colored solid rubber compounds are available in non-marking formulations. If non-marking performance is critical, consider Monoprene/Performa wheels or thermoplastic rubber (TPR) wheels, which are specifically engineered for zero-mark operation.

Solid rubber replacement wheels at Caster Central are available in capacities from 100 to 500 pounds per wheel. The load rating scales with wheel diameter and width. For loads exceeding 500 pounds per wheel, consider a harder material like polyurethane, phenolic, or nylon, or step up to a larger diameter solid rubber wheel.

Solid rubber wheels can handle occasional outdoor use on paved or smooth surfaces. However, natural rubber compounds degrade with prolonged UV exposure, causing cracking and hardening over time. For regular outdoor use, neoprene rubber wheels offer far superior weather resistance. For rough outdoor terrain, pneumatic or semi-pneumatic wheels are better choices.
