Phenolic Wheels

Phenolic wheels are manufactured from layers of woven fabric (canvas or linen) or paper that are saturated with phenolic resin and compressed under heat and pressure. The result is a dense, hard, laminated material that resists heat, moisture, and many chemicals.

Phenolic wheels are rated from -45 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit by default, or up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit when specified with metal washers. Sustained temperatures above the rating will begin to degrade the resin binder. For higher temperatures, consider high-temperature polymer or metal wheels.

Yes. Phenolic is a hard, rigid material, and phenolic wheels produce noticeable rolling noise on concrete, tile, and other hard floors. In noise-sensitive environments, rubber or polyurethane wheels are quieter alternatives. In standard industrial settings, the noise level is generally acceptable.

Phenolic wheels can tolerate occasional outdoor use on smooth pavement, but they are not ideal for prolonged outdoor exposure. UV radiation and extreme weather can degrade the phenolic resin over time. For regular outdoor use, rubber or polyolefin wheels are better suited.

The phenolic resin laminate provides inherent moisture resistance, allowing these wheels to perform in damp environments without swelling or degrading. Phenolic wheels resist many oils, grease, and common industrial solvents, though prolonged immersion in strong acids or alkalis can damage the laminate over time. Their hard tread surface offers low rolling resistance on smooth floors, requiring less effort to move loaded carts and equipment compared to rubber or polyurethane wheels at equivalent loads.

Phenolic replacement wheels have been an industrial standard for decades, and they remain one of the most cost-effective options for applications that need moderate heat resistance and reasonable load capacity without the higher price of specialty polymer or metal wheels. They are stocked in diameters from 3 to 8 inches with standard bore sizes and common bearing configurations. When budgets are tight and the application calls for a no-frills, dependable hard-tread wheel with heat tolerance, phenolic is a proven solution.
