Medium Duty Casters

Medium-duty casters generally carry between 300 and 800 lbs per caster. A four-caster cart equipped with 500 lb-rated medium-duty casters can safely handle up to 2,000 lbs total. Always calculate per-caster load by dividing total weight (including the cart itself) by the number of casters, then add a 25-30% safety factor.

For standard smooth warehouse concrete, polyurethane-on-iron wheels offer the best combination of load capacity, floor protection, and durability. Hard rubber is a more economical alternative that still protects floors. If you are dealing with rough or uneven concrete, larger diameter wheels (5" to 8") roll over imperfections more easily.

Casters are rated for continuous use at their published capacity. Occasional overloading (exceeding rated capacity by 10-15% for short periods) may not cause immediate failure, but it will reduce service life significantly. Overloaded casters develop flat spots, cracked treads, and bearing failures. Always size casters for the maximum anticipated load, not the average load.

Common brake options include cam brakes (foot pedal locks the wheel), top-lock brakes (locks both the wheel and the swivel raceway), and side-lock brakes. Top-lock brakes are recommended for carts that must remain completely stationary during loading because they prevent both rolling and swiveling.
