TPU wheels are among the best-performing polymer wheels in cold environments. They maintain flexibility and tread integrity down to -40 degrees F, where standard thermoset polyurethane becomes brittle and prone to cracking. If your carts or equipment operate in coolers (32-40 degrees F), freezers (-10 to 0 degrees F), or blast freezers (-40 degrees F), TPU wheels will roll easier, last longer, and resist cold-related failure better than any other polyurethane type.

In moderate-temperature, general industrial conditions, TPU wheels have slightly lower abrasion resistance than premium thermoset polyurethane compounds. The difference is typically 10-20% less wear life under identical conditions. However, TPU's advantages in cold performance, lighter weight, and consistent molding quality make it the superior choice when those factors matter. In cold environments specifically, TPU will outlast thermoset polyurethane by a significant margin because thermoset compounds degrade rapidly below their effective temperature range.

Two factors contribute to the weight reduction. First, TPU has a slightly lower density than thermoset polyurethane. Second, the injection molding process allows for optimized internal geometry — including ribbing and hollow core designs — that are not possible with cast polyurethane manufacturing. The combined effect is a 15-25% weight reduction compared to a thermoset polyurethane wheel of the same diameter and load rating, directly reducing the force needed to push or pull loaded equipment.

Yes. Unlike thermoset polyurethane, which undergoes irreversible chemical cross-linking during curing, TPU is a thermoplastic that can be melted and reprocessed. End-of-life TPU wheels can be ground and re-molded into new products. While recycling infrastructure for TPU is not as widespread as for commodity plastics like HDPE or PET, the material is genuinely recyclable and many TPU wheel manufacturers participate in take-back or recycling programs.

Where TPU wheels truly differentiate themselves is cold-weather performance. Standard thermoset polyurethane becomes increasingly rigid below 0 degrees F, raising rolling resistance and risk of cracking. TPU maintains its elasticity and tread performance down to -40 degrees F, making it the polyurethane type of choice for cold storage, freezer applications, loading docks in northern climates, and any environment with sustained sub-zero exposure. TPU wheels are also lighter than comparable thermoset polyurethane wheels on metal cores, typically offering a 15-25% weight reduction, which directly reduces push/pull force.

TPU wheels are available in a range of durometers from Shore A 80 to Shore D 55, with most industrial applications using Shore A 85-95 compounds. They provide good resistance to abrasion, oils, and greases, and are non-marking on most floor surfaces. Load capacities are competitive with standard polyurethane for most diameters. If your application involves cold environments, weight sensitivity, or sustainability requirements, TPU wheels offer advantages worth evaluating.
