Non-Marking Floor Protection

Polyurethane caster wheels are the most versatile and widely specified replacement wheel material for applications that demand floor protection, noise reduction, and long tread life. The polyurethane tread is non-marking on virtually all floor surfaces, producing no black marks, scuffs, or chemical residue on concrete, epoxy, tile, hardwood, vinyl, or coated floors. This makes polyurethane the default choice for retail, healthcare, office, hospitality, and any environment where floor appearance matters.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyurethane Wheels

Yes. Polyurethane wheels are one of the most reliably non-marking wheel materials available. They leave no black marks, rust stains, or chemical residue on floors. Light-colored polyurethane treads offer the best non-marking performance. Even dark-colored formulations are significantly better than rubber in terms of floor marking.

For general-purpose use, 85A to 95A durometer provides a good balance of floor protection and load capacity. For maximum floor protection and noise reduction, choose 70A to 80A (softer). For maximum load capacity and lowest rolling resistance, choose 95A and above (harder). Our product listings include durometer specifications for each wheel.

Polyurethane wheels have higher load capacity, three to five times the abrasion resistance, and better chemical resistance than rubber. Rubber wheels provide softer cushioning, quieter operation at low speeds, and better performance on rough surfaces. Polyurethane is preferred when tread longevity, load capacity, and floor protection are priorities. Rubber is preferred for maximum shock absorption and minimum noise.

Polyurethane resists casual contact with oils, greases, and hydraulic fluids. However, prolonged immersion in petroleum-based products can soften and swell certain polyurethane formulations over time. For constant oil exposure, ester-based polyurethanes offer better resistance than ether-based types. Contact our team for specific chemical compatibility guidance.

Polyurethane Replacement Wheels: Floor Protection, Quiet Operation, and Long Tread Life

Polyurethane wheels are available across a wide range of durometers (hardness ratings) to match different application requirements. Softer treads provide better floor protection and noise dampening, while harder treads support higher load capacities and lower rolling resistance. Load capacities for polyurethane replacement wheels span from 100 lbs for small light-duty wheels up to 4,000 lbs and above for large-diameter polyurethane-on-iron or polyurethane-on-aluminum core wheels. This range covers everything from medical equipment carts to heavy industrial material handling.

The polyurethane tread also delivers exceptional abrasion resistance, typically outlasting rubber treads by three to five times in equivalent applications. It resists many oils, greases, and common chemicals, and operates effectively from approximately minus 20 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Browse this collection to find polyurethane replacement wheels in the diameter, tread width, durometer, and bearing configuration that matches your specific needs. Our catalog includes options on plastic cores for lighter applications and metal cores for the heaviest loads.
