Brake & Locking Casters

Locking casters hold a cart, rack or machine where you park it. This is every caster we carry with a brake or wheel lock, swivel and rigid, from 2 inch furniture casters to heavy industrial models. Filter by brake type, wheel size and load rating to narrow it down.

Which Caster Lock Do You Need?

Every locking caster stops the wheel from rolling. What changes is how the lock holds and whether it also stops the swivel. Tread lock brakes press a pad against the tread. Face brakes and side brakes clamp the wheel from the side. Total lock brakes lock the wheel and the swivel together, so the caster can neither roll nor turn. You will also find top lock brakes, cam brakes and drum brakes here.

For a cart that only has to stay put on a level floor, a wheel brake is usually enough. For equipment people work on or lean against, choose total lock, because a caster that can still swivel lets the load shift.

Brake & Locking Casters Buying Guide & FAQ

Step down on the brake pedal or lever until it clicks into place, and lift it to release. Hand-set brakes work the same way from above. If your caster has no brake, a matching locking caster is the simplest fix.

The usual setup is two locking swivel casters at the push end and two rigid casters at the other. For heavy loads, sloped floors or equipment people work on, put locking casters on all four corners.

A brake stops rolling, not swiveling. To stop the swivel, use a total lock caster, which locks both, or add a swivel lock, which holds the caster pointing straight while the wheel still rolls.

Floor locks mount to the cart and press a foot down onto the floor, so the cart stays put whatever casters it runs on. For a permanent fix, swap the casters for locking casters of the same size and mounting.

Most carts run two locking swivel casters and two rigid casters. Putting the brakes on the swivel end keeps the pedals where the operator stands. Rigid casters with brakes are here too, for equipment that only moves in a straight line.

2 inch and 3 inch locking casters for furniture, displays and light carts sit alongside heavy duty brake casters for racks, machinery and industrial carts. Choose the load rating and wheel size first, then the brake.
