6 Inch Casters

Choose 6 inch casters when your application involves any of the following: per-wheel loads above 1,200 lbs, rough or damaged concrete surfaces, frequent travel across dock plates or expansion joints wider than 1/2 inch, outdoor or semi-outdoor use, or environments with persistent floor debris such as metal chips, wood scraps, or gravel. The larger diameter handles all of these conditions with less rolling resistance and longer wheel life.

Polyurethane-on-iron wheels handle moderately rough concrete while protecting the floor and reducing noise. For severely damaged or unfinished concrete, Mold-On rubber or semi-pneumatic treads absorb impact and vibration more effectively. Avoid hard phenolic or cast iron wheels on rough surfaces, as they transmit shock directly to the load and the operator and accelerate wheel wear.

Six-inch casters handle outdoor applications on relatively smooth surfaces like asphalt, concrete pads, and paved dock areas. Semi-pneumatic or flat-free foam-filled treads work best outdoors because they absorb uneven terrain without the risk of punctures. For unpaved surfaces, loose gravel, or grass, consider stepping up to an 8 or 10 inch wheel for adequate ground clearance and rolling capability.

Add the rated capacity of each individual caster, then reduce the total by 25% for a standard safety margin. If the load is unevenly distributed, calculate the maximum load that any single caster will bear and ensure that caster is rated accordingly. For equipment with three casters instead of four, each caster bears a larger share of the load, so capacity planning is especially important. Shock loads, such as dropping pallets onto a cart, require additional derating beyond the standard 25%.

The practical advantage of a 6 inch wheel extends beyond obstacle clearance. Larger diameter means a larger contact patch, which distributes load more evenly and reduces point pressure on your floor surface. It also means the wheel rolls with less effort per pound of load, a factor that directly affects worker productivity and safety in push-pull operations. For facilities transitioning from forklifts to gravity-fed or manually-pushed cart systems, 6 inch casters are frequently the minimum recommended size.
