3 Inch Casters

Three-inch casters are the workhorse of commercial and light industrial environments. They perform well on utility carts, bussing carts, wire shelving units, tool carts, janitorial equipment, medical equipment stands, and light manufacturing fixtures. Their capacity range of 150-500 lbs per wheel handles most cart and rack applications without the added height of larger industrial casters.

The primary differences are load capacity and floor obstacle clearance. Three-inch casters top out around 500 lbs per wheel and work well on smooth to moderately rough surfaces. Four-inch casters extend capacity to 800 lbs per wheel and roll more easily over larger debris, cracks, and uneven surfaces. If your application involves smooth commercial flooring and loads under 500 lbs per caster, 3 inch wheels keep your equipment lower to the ground and are generally more cost-effective.

The 3 inch size is available in nearly every standard wheel material. Polyurethane is the most popular all-around choice because it combines good load capacity with floor protection and quiet operation. Rubber treads offer shock absorption for sensitive equipment. Nylon handles heavy loads and chemical exposure. Phenolic wheels are economical for lighter applications. Stainless steel and high-temperature options are also available for specialty environments.

Most mobile equipment benefits from a combination of both. A common setup uses two swivel casters at the steering end and two rigid casters at the opposite end, which provides maneuverability while maintaining straight-line tracking. All-swivel configurations are ideal for equipment that needs to move in any direction, such as shelving in tight aisles. Consider adding brakes to at least two casters so equipment stays put when parked.
