Brake & Locking Casters

Step down on the brake pedal or lever until it clicks into place, and lift it to release. Hand-set brakes work the same way from above. If your caster has no brake, a matching locking caster is the simplest fix.

The usual setup is two locking swivel casters at the push end and two rigid casters at the other. For heavy loads, sloped floors or equipment people work on, put locking casters on all four corners.

A brake stops rolling, not swiveling. To stop the swivel, use a total lock caster, which locks both, or add a swivel lock, which holds the caster pointing straight while the wheel still rolls.

Floor locks mount to the cart and press a foot down onto the floor, so the cart stays put whatever casters it runs on. For a permanent fix, swap the casters for locking casters of the same size and mounting.

Most carts run two locking swivel casters and two rigid casters. Putting the brakes on the swivel end keeps the pedals where the operator stands. Rigid casters with brakes are here too, for equipment that only moves in a straight line.
