Material Selection and Performance

Choosing the correct replacement wheel is the most critical decision in any caster assembly. The wheel material determines load capacity, floor protection, noise level, rolling resistance, chemical compatibility, and operating temperature range. At Caster Central, we stock replacement wheels in every major material and size so you can rebuild existing casters or design custom assemblies from the ground up.

Wheels Buying Guide & FAQ

A replacement wheel is the rolling component only, without the fork, swivel housing, or mounting hardware. Replacement wheels are used to rebuild worn casters or to build custom caster assemblies by pairing a wheel with a separate rig or fork. Complete casters include both the wheel and the mounting assembly ready to install.

Measure the outer diameter of the existing wheel, the tread width, and the bore diameter (the hole through the center). You will also need to know the bearing type. These four measurements will identify the correct replacement. If you have a part number from the original wheel, our team can cross-reference it.

For smooth concrete, polyurethane wheels offer the best combination of floor protection, load capacity, and rolling ease. For rough or cracked concrete, rubber or solid elastomer wheels absorb shock better and handle surface irregularities. For extremely heavy loads on concrete, nylon or phenolic wheels provide the highest capacity without flat-spotting.

It is generally not recommended. Different materials have different rolling resistances and load characteristics, which can cause uneven wear and tracking problems. If you need different properties at different positions, consult our technical team for a compatible pairing.

Our replacement wheel catalog spans soft-tread options like rubber and polyurethane for floor protection and noise reduction, mid-range performers like nylon and phenolic for high-capacity industrial use, and heavy-duty metal wheels in cast iron and steel for extreme loads up to 40,000 lbs. Specialty options include high-temperature polymer wheels rated above 350 degrees Fahrenheit, metric-dimensioned wheels for European equipment, and chemical-resistant polyolefin and polypropylene wheels for wet or corrosive processing environments.

Every wheel we sell is designed as a standalone replacement component with standard bore sizes and precision bearings. Whether you are replacing a single worn wheel on a food service cart or outfitting an entire fleet of industrial dollies, our technical team can help you match the right material, diameter, tread width, and load rating to your specific requirements.
