Light Duty Casters

Light-duty casters are typically rated between 75 and 350 lbs per caster. They use smaller wheel diameters (1.5" to 5"), lighter gauge housings, and softer tread materials. They are designed for indoor environments where floor protection, low noise, and compact overall height are priorities.

Soft rubber and thermoplastic rubber (TPR) treads are the best choice for hardwood, tile, and laminate floors. They roll quietly, absorb vibration, and will not scuff or scratch finished surfaces. Avoid hard nylon or polypropylene wheels on these surfaces -- they can dent or mark flooring over time.

Remove the old caster by pulling or unscrewing it from the leg socket. Measure the stem diameter (common sizes are 7/16", 1/2", and 5/8"), stem length, and the inside diameter of the socket in the furniture leg. Match these dimensions to the new caster's stem specifications. Grip ring stems simply press in, while threaded stems screw into place.

A set of casters rated at 75-100 lbs per caster provides a comfortable safety margin. For heavy-duty office chairs or bariatric seating, look for casters rated 100-150 lbs each.
