8 Inch Casters

Eight-inch casters are standard equipment in steel mills, foundries, automotive stamping plants, paper and lumber mills, scrap metal processing, shipbuilding, aerospace tooling, and heavy equipment manufacturing. They are also widely used on industrial dumpsters, construction site equipment, and large-scale material staging systems in distribution centers handling oversized or extremely heavy goods.

An 8 inch caster provides approximately 4 inches of clearance between the floor and the underside of the mounting plate. This is enough to roll over most common industrial floor debris, shallow drain channels, recessed rail tracks, and surface irregularities up to about 1.5 inches without jamming or lifting the cart. For larger obstacles or truly rough terrain, 10 or 12 inch casters offer additional clearance.

Mold-On rubber is a solid elastomer bonded to a rigid core, providing excellent shock absorption, floor protection, and load capacity without any risk of going flat. Semi-pneumatic treads use a hollow rubber tire with an internal rib structure that mimics air-filled performance without requiring inflation. Semi-pneumatics offer a softer ride over rough surfaces and are lighter, but they carry less weight per wheel. Choose Mold-On rubber for heavy loads on moderately rough floors and semi-pneumatic for lighter loads on very rough or outdoor surfaces.

Yes, but only when properly specified. Tow-line service generates lateral forces, high-speed directional changes, and repetitive impact that standard swivel casters cannot survive long-term. For tow-line trains, specify kingpinless swivel casters with hardened raceways, heavy-gauge forged forks, and sealed tapered roller bearings. From an operational standpoint, 8 inch casters fundamentally change how heavy loads behave in transit. The large wheel rolls over obstacles that would stop or deflect a smaller wheel, which means loaded carts track straighter and require less corrective steering from operators.
