Swivel casters provide maneuverability, but that free rotation becomes a liability when you need to push a cart in a straight line down a long aisle or corridor. Swivel locks solve this by allowing you to lock the swivel raceway in a forward-facing position, temporarily converting a swivel caster into a rigid caster. The most common and effective setup locks the two rear casters in the forward position while leaving the two front casters free to swivel. This gives you directional stability from the rear with steering control at the front. Locking all four casters makes the cart fully rigid, which is useful for towing but eliminates steering.

A swivel lock prevents the swivel raceway from rotating but does not stop the wheel from spinning. The cart can still roll, just in a straight line. A total lock brake stops both wheel rotation and swivel movement simultaneously, immobilizing the caster entirely. They serve different purposes: swivel locks improve tracking while moving, total locks hold the cart stationary.

Swivel locks for kingpinless casters do exist, but they require a model specifically designed for that raceway type. Standard pin-style swivel locks designed for kingpin casters will not fit. Verify the product is rated for kingpinless casters before ordering.

Swivel Locks for Directional Caster Control

Caster Central swivel locks are available in foot-operated and hand-operated models. Foot-operated locks are the most popular choice for carts and platform trucks because the operator can engage or disengage the lock without bending down or releasing the cart handle. Hand-operated locks work well on equipment where foot access to the caster is limited or where precise lock positioning is preferred. Both types use a pin or cam mechanism that indexes into the swivel raceway to prevent rotation.

Swivel locks are especially beneficial on four-swivel-caster carts that tend to fishtail or drift at speed. Locking the two rear casters in the forward position while leaving the front casters free to swivel gives the cart car-like steering: stable, directional tracking with responsive front-end steering. This configuration reduces operator fatigue, improves load control, and increases safety when transporting heavy or tall loads through busy facilities.
