Soft polyurethane-treaded twin-wheel casters are the best option for protecting hardwood and laminate floors from office chair damage. The soft tread distributes the load without scratching or denting the surface, and the twin-wheel design reduces point pressure compared to single-wheel casters. Avoid hard nylon casters on hardwood—they will scratch and dent the floor over time. A chair mat provides additional protection in heavy-use areas.

Remove an existing caster from the chair base and measure the stem. Most office chairs use a grip ring stem that is 7/16 inch diameter by 7/8 inch long—this is the industry standard for office seating. Some chairs use a 3/8 inch stem. Measure both the diameter and length of the stem, and check whether it has a grip ring (a metal ring around the stem that snaps into the socket) or threads. For commercial low-pile carpet, harder nylon or polypropylene wheels roll more easily and do not dig into the carpet fibers. Using hard casters on hard floors causes scratching. Using soft casters on thick carpet causes excessive drag and difficulty rolling.

Grip ring stems have a metal ring that snaps into a socket or sleeve in the furniture leg, holding the caster in place by friction. They are the standard mount for office chairs and light furniture. Threaded stems screw into a threaded receiver or nut in the equipment frame, providing a more secure mechanical connection. Threaded stems are used on heavier furniture, equipment carts, and applications where the caster must not pull out under load. Check your existing mount type before ordering replacements.
