Engineered Without a Kingpin Bolt

Traditional swivel casters rely on a single kingpin bolt to connect the fork assembly to the top plate. Under heavy loads, repeated impacts, and constant use, that kingpin becomes the weakest link -- it loosens, bends, and eventually fails. Kingpinless casters solve this problem by engineering out the kingpin entirely. Instead, the swivel raceway is precision-machined directly into the caster housing, with hardened ball bearings seated in a continuous raceway channel. The result is a swivel caster that distributes load forces across the entire raceway surface rather than concentrating stress on a single bolt.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kingpinless Casters

A standard swivel caster uses a single kingpin bolt to attach the fork to the top plate. A kingpinless caster eliminates that bolt entirely. The swivel raceway is machined directly into the caster housing, and hardened ball bearings run in a continuous channel. This distributes load across the full raceway diameter instead of concentrating it on one bolt, dramatically increasing strength and service life.

Kingpin bolts fail because they bear the full rotational load at a single stress point. Over time, the bolt loosens from vibration and impacts, the threads strip, or the bolt bends under lateral force. In high-load applications, this failure can happen within months. Once the kingpin loosens, the caster develops play, wobbles, and eventually the fork separates from the plate -- a serious safety hazard.

Our kingpinless casters range from 1,000 lbs to over 40,000 lbs per caster. The Albion 75 Series starts at 1,500 lbs for 4-inch wheel models and reaches 5,000+ lbs for 10-inch and 12-inch wheel configurations. For extreme loads beyond that range, specialty kingpinless models are available on request.

At the swivel point, yes. Because there is no kingpin bolt to loosen or tighten, the swivel mechanism requires no periodic maintenance. The wheel bearings may still need occasional lubrication depending on the operating environment, and wheel treads will wear over time and eventually need replacement. But the most common maintenance task on traditional casters -- tightening or replacing the kingpin -- is eliminated completely.

Kingpinless Casters: Eliminate the Leading Cause of Caster Failure

Our kingpinless caster selection features the Albion 75 Series, constructed from heat-treated AISI 1045 laser-cut steel with fully welded legs on both inside and outside surfaces. These casters are rated from 1,000 lbs to over 40,000 lbs per caster, with wheel diameters from 4 inches to 12 inches. Available wheel materials include cast iron, polyurethane-on-iron, phenolic, and forged steel. Both swivel and rigid configurations are in stock, along with optional top-lock brakes for models that require secure positioning.

Kingpinless casters are the standard specification for die carts, mold transfer equipment, aerospace tooling, heavy press tables, and any application where caster failure creates safety hazards or costly downtime. The elimination of the kingpin also removes the need for periodic kingpin tightening -- making these casters effectively maintenance-free at the swivel point.
