Hospitality Hotel Casters

Hotel luggage carts typically use 6-inch to 8-inch diameter pneumatic or semi-pneumatic wheels for the rear (fixed) position and 4-inch to 5-inch swivel casters at the front. The large rear wheels handle carpet, thresholds, and elevator gaps easily, while the smaller swivel casters provide steering. All wheels should be non-marking and rated for at least 150-250 lbs per caster to handle fully loaded luggage stacks.

Use non-marking gray rubber or polyurethane wheels. These materials are specifically formulated to leave zero scuffs on VCT, LVT, hardwood, and marble flooring. Ensure wheels are clean and free of debris—embedded grit on wheel surfaces can scratch floors even with non-marking compounds. Replace wheels that show flat spots or surface damage, as deformed wheels concentrate pressure and cause floor indentations.

For banquet tables that must roll across carpet during setup and breakdown, use 3-inch to 4-inch diameter casters with hard rubber or nylon wheels. Harder wheels roll more easily on carpet than soft rubber, which tends to drag and resist rolling on padded surfaces. Swivel casters on all legs allow tables to be maneuvered easily, and at least two casters should have brakes to lock the table during the event.

Noise is a top priority in hospitality. Squeaking, rattling, or thumping casters disrupt guest comfort and create an unprofessional impression. Precision bearings, soft-tread wheels, and properly maintained swivel mechanisms minimize rolling noise. Polyurethane and rubber wheels are quieter than nylon or phenolic on hard surfaces. If existing casters are noisy, the most common causes are worn bearings, flat-spotted wheels, or dry swivel joints—all of which indicate the caster should be replaced.
