Furniture Casters

Soft polyurethane or rubber-coated twin-wheel casters are the best choice for hardwood floors. They roll smoothly without scratching, scuffing, or leaving marks. Avoid the hard nylon casters that come standard on most office chairs—they are designed for carpet and will damage hardwood, laminate, and vinyl over time. Look for casters specifically labeled for hard floors.

The vast majority of office chairs use a grip-ring stem that is 7/16 inch in diameter and approximately 7/8 inch long. This is an industry standard. To confirm, pull out an existing caster and measure the metal stem. If the stem does not pull out easily with a firm tug, it may be a threaded stem—unscrew it counterclockwise to remove and measure the thread size.

For office chairs, each caster should be rated for at least 50 lbs, giving a five-caster chair a total capacity of 250 lbs. For beds, calculate the total weight of the mattress, frame, and maximum occupant weight, then divide by the number of casters. Heavy furniture like dining tables and sofas may need casters rated at 75-150 lbs each. Always size based on the maximum expected load.

Yes. Dual-surface casters use a polyurethane tread that rolls smoothly on hard floors without marking while still gripping and rolling effectively on low- to medium-pile carpet. These are a good all-purpose choice for offices and homes with mixed flooring. For very thick or high-pile carpet, a harder wheel with a larger diameter provides better performance.
