Most road cases and rack enclosures use expanding adapter stems that insert into the tubular frame legs and tighten with a bolt to grip the inside wall of the tube. Common tube sizes are 1 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch round. Measure the inside diameter of your case leg to determine the correct expanding adapter size. Some heavier road cases use recessed top-plate mounts bolted directly to the case bottom. Caster Central lists compatible tube sizes on every expanding adapter caster.

Pneumatic casters provide superior shock absorption and roll more easily over rough outdoor surfaces like gravel, grass, dirt, and uneven asphalt. They are the best choice for equipment that regularly moves across outdoor venue terrain. Solid wheels are more durable and cannot go flat—important for equipment that stays loaded on a truck between events. For production companies that work both indoor and outdoor venues, consider equipping cases with solid polyurethane for indoor use and keeping a set of pneumatic casters for outdoor load-ins.

Total lock brakes that stop both wheel rotation and swivel action are essential for stage platforms, drum risers, and any equipment that must stay absolutely stationary during a performance. A directional lock alone is not sufficient—it prevents swiveling but still allows the wheel to roll. For large staging sections, consider adding floor locks in addition to total lock casters for maximum stability under dynamic performance loads.

Weigh the case fully loaded with all equipment, cables, and accessories. Divide by the number of casters (typically four) and apply a minimum 25 percent safety factor to account for dynamic loading during rolling. For road cases that will be rolled across rough surfaces or dock plate transitions, use a 40-50 percent safety factor because impact forces at surface transitions can be two to three times the static load. A 200 lb loaded case on four casters needs at least 63 lb per caster capacity, but 75-100 lb rated casters are a better choice for road use.
