Metric Casters

A metric caster uses metric measurements for all critical dimensions -- top-plate bolt patterns are specified in millimeters, threaded stems use metric thread pitches (M8, M10, M12), and wheel diameters are given in metric units. Standard US casters use inch-based measurements. The two are not interchangeable without adapters or modification, so matching the correct measurement system to your equipment is essential.

Any equipment manufactured to European or international ISO standards. This includes European-built industrial machinery, imported medical carts, laboratory instruments from German or Swiss manufacturers, electronics enclosures built to DIN standards, and commercial kitchen equipment from European suppliers. If the equipment manual specifies bolt patterns in millimeters, it needs metric casters.

Generally, no. The bolt patterns will not align, and the stem diameters and thread pitches are different between metric and US standards. Attempting to force a US caster into a metric mounting point risks stripped threads, misaligned bolt holes, and compromised load capacity. Always match the caster measurement system to the equipment specification.

The most common metric threaded stems are M10x1.5 and M12x1.75, which are found on a wide range of European equipment. M8 stems are used on lighter-duty equipment, and M16 stems appear on heavier industrial installations. Always verify the exact thread pitch and stem length required by your equipment before ordering.
