Medical Casters

Medical-grade casters are manufactured to tighter tolerances and higher material standards than commercial casters. Key differences include precision swivel bearings for smooth directional control, sealed or shielded housings for infection control, non-marking wheels that protect clinical flooring, chemical resistance to medical disinfectants, and in many cases antimicrobial wheel compounds. Medical-grade casters also undergo more rigorous testing for roll resistance, swivel effort, and cycle life to ensure reliable performance in clinical settings.

Antimicrobial casters are not universally required by regulation, but they are increasingly specified in medical, dental, and veterinary facilities as part of comprehensive infection control programs. Antimicrobial wheel compounds inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew on the wheel surface between cleaning cycles. They are particularly recommended for equipment in exam rooms, operatories, and treatment areas where cross-contamination risk is highest.

Dental stools typically require 2-inch to 2.5-inch twin-wheel casters with soft polyurethane treads. The twin-wheel design provides stability under the shifting dynamic load of a seated clinician. Soft treads protect dental office flooring and roll quietly. Precision swivel bearings allow the stool to move smoothly with foot pressure so the clinician can reposition without using their hands. Most dental stools use a grip-ring or friction-ring stem mount.

Polyurethane and TPR (thermoplastic rubber) wheels offer the best resistance to the disinfectants commonly used in medical environments, including bleach solutions, quaternary ammonium compounds, hydrogen peroxide products, and alcohol-based cleaners. Standard rubber compounds may degrade over time with repeated chemical exposure. Check the wheel material's chemical resistance rating against your facility's specific disinfectant protocol.
