Pneumatic (air-filled) wheels provide the best ride quality over rough terrain, absorbing bumps and surface irregularities that would transmit harsh vibration through solid wheels. However, pneumatics carry less weight per wheel, require inflation maintenance, and can go flat. Solid wheels, whether polyurethane, rubber, or metal, carry significantly higher loads and require zero inflation maintenance but transmit more vibration. Choose pneumatic for outdoor and rough-terrain applications with moderate loads, and solid for high-capacity in-plant or paved-surface use.

Tapered roller bearings are the standard recommendation for 10 inch casters because they handle the combination of high radial loads and thrust loads that large, heavy wheels generate. Precision ball bearings are suitable for lighter applications within the 10 inch range where smooth rolling and lower push force are priorities. Avoid plain bearings at this size unless the application involves very slow, intermittent movement.
