Molded at Shore A 90-95 hardness and chemically bonded to cast iron or aluminum cores, these wheels deliver a proven balance of load capacity, floor protection, rolling ease, and durability that suits the vast majority of manufacturing, warehousing, and institutional environments. They are the default recommendation when no extreme environmental factors are present.

Standard polyurethane combines advantages of both rubber and hard plastic. Compared to rubber, polyurethane offers 3-5 times greater abrasion resistance, higher load capacity at the same diameter, and better resistance to oils and chemicals. Compared to nylon or other hard plastics, polyurethane provides floor protection, lower noise, better shock absorption, and will not damage finished flooring. Polyurethane bridges the gap between the softness of rubber and the load capacity of hard materials.

Cast iron cores provide the highest load ratings and are the standard choice for heavy industrial applications. Aluminum cores reduce wheel weight by approximately 40-50%, which lowers push/pull force and is preferred for ergonomic considerations or where total cart weight matters. Aluminum cores also resist corrosion better than iron in damp environments. If your primary concern is maximum load capacity, choose cast iron. If weight reduction and corrosion resistance matter, choose aluminum.

Standard polyurethane wheels typically outlast rubber wheels by 3-5 times under similar conditions, making them one of the best values in the caster wheel category. Actual service life depends on load, speed, floor condition, and environmental factors. In a typical warehouse or manufacturing setting running 8- to 16-hour shifts, standard polyurethane wheels commonly last 2-4 years before tread wear requires replacement.

Standard polyurethane at Shore A 90-95 performs well on smooth to moderately rough surfaces including sealed concrete, asphalt, dock plates, and expansion joints. For consistently rough terrain, outdoor surfaces, or debris-laden floors, a softer ergonomic polyurethane or a larger diameter wheel may roll more easily. Standard polyurethane will not chunk or tear on rough surfaces, but rolling resistance increases as floor roughness increases.

Standard Polyurethane Replacement Wheels for General Industrial Applications

The polyurethane tread is applied to the metal core through a chemical bonding process that creates a permanent molecular bond between the urethane and the core material. This bond is stronger than the polyurethane itself, meaning the tread will wear through before it separates from the core under proper loading conditions. The Shore A 90-95 hardness provides excellent resistance to abrasion, cutting, and chunking while still offering meaningful floor protection compared to bare metal or hard plastic wheels. Standard polyurethane wheels operate reliably from 0 degrees F to 180 degrees F and resist most common industrial oils, greases, and cleaning chemicals.

Load capacities range from 200 lbs for smaller 3-inch wheels up to 2,500 lbs or more for 8-inch wheels on cast iron cores. This range covers the majority of carts, racks, dollies, platform trucks, and light to medium equipment in industrial and commercial settings.
