Use this saw-tooth wood socket to turn a wooden furniture leg into a mount for a grip-neck stem caster.

A wood socket is a metal sleeve that drives into a drilled hole in a wooden leg and gives it a bore sized to hold a tapered grip-neck caster stem, so a chair, table, or wood-framed cart takes a standard caster without a plate. The outside carries saw-teeth that bite the wood as the socket is driven in, so it grips and will not pull out under the caster. To install, drill a 3/8 by 1-5/8-inch hole in the wood and drive the zinc-plated socket home, then push in a 5/16 by 1-1/2-inch tapered grip-neck stem.
