This spanner bushing is the sleeve that lets a 1/2-inch axle run through a 3/4-inch wheel bore, a 2-7/16 inch adapter that takes up the gap so the wheel sits centered and the axle does not rattle in an oversized hub.

The job is alignment: a wheel built for a 3/4-inch bearing will wallow on a smaller axle without a spacer, wearing the bore oval and letting the wheel cock under load. The bushing fills that space, holds the wheel square to the axle, and sets the bearing the right distance off the yoke legs so it does not bind. Reach for it when you are adapting a wheel to a caster whose axle is a size smaller than the hub, or replacing a crushed original spacer.
