Polyurethane on Cast Iron Wheels

Polyurethane on cast iron wheels are available with load ratings exceeding 3,000 lbs per wheel in 8-inch diameters. The cast iron core provides the structural foundation for the highest load ratings in the polyurethane category. Specific capacity depends on wheel diameter, tread width, polyurethane compound, and bearing type. For extremely heavy applications, wider tread widths distribute load across more tread surface, which improves both capacity and tread life.

Bare cast iron wheels damage flooring, generate high noise levels, and transmit shock and vibration directly to the load. The polyurethane tread on a cast iron core solves all three problems while maintaining nearly the same load capacity. The polyurethane tread protects concrete, epoxy, tile, and other flooring surfaces, reduces noise by 10-15 dB compared to bare iron, and absorbs moderate shock and vibration. The small reduction in load rating versus bare iron is negligible for the vast majority of applications.

Industrial polyurethane on cast iron wheels use a chemical bonding process. The cast iron core is cleaned, grit-blasted, and coated with a bonding agent. Liquid polyurethane is then cast directly onto the prepared core surface and cured, forming a permanent chemical bond at the molecular level. This bond is stronger than the polyurethane tread material itself, ensuring the tread wears away rather than separating from the core under rated loads.

Exposed cast iron surfaces can rust when exposed to moisture. The polyurethane tread protects the tread surface of the core, but the hub face and bore area may develop surface rust in wet environments. For washdown or high-humidity environments, consider applying a corrosion inhibitor to exposed iron surfaces, using stainless steel bearings, or choosing a polyurethane-on-aluminum or solid polyurethane wheel if load ratings permit. Surface rust on the core does not typically affect wheel performance unless it compromises the bearing fit.

The combination works because each material does what it does best. The cast iron core handles the compressive, shear, and bearing loads, while the polyurethane tread (typically Shore A 92-95) manages the interface between the wheel and the floor. The chemical bond between the tread and core is engineered to withstand the high stresses generated at the bond line under heavy loads. Properly bonded polyurethane on cast iron wheels will wear the tread to nothing before the bond fails. This makes them far more reliable than press-fit or mechanically attached tread designs that can slip or detach under heavy or shock loading.

These wheels are the standard specification for heavy platform trucks, die carts, industrial trailers, heavy manufacturing equipment, and any application where per-wheel loads exceed 1,000 lbs and floor protection is required. The trade-off is weight — polyurethane on cast iron wheels are the heaviest in the polyurethane family. For applications under 1,000 lbs per wheel where push/pull force is a priority, aluminum-core or ergonomic polyurethane options may be more appropriate.
