For washdown or high-humidity environments, consider applying a corrosion inhibitor to exposed iron surfaces, using stainless steel bearings, or choosing a polyurethane-on-aluminum or solid polyurethane wheel if load ratings permit. Surface rust on the core does not typically affect wheel performance unless it compromises the bearing fit.

Polyurethane on Cast Iron Core Replacement Wheels for Heavy-Duty Applications

The combination works because each material does what it does best. The cast iron core handles the compressive, shear, and bearing loads, while the polyurethane tread (typically Shore A 92-95) manages the interface between the wheel and the floor. The chemical bond between the tread and core is engineered to withstand the high stresses generated at the bond line under heavy loads. Properly bonded polyurethane on cast iron wheels will wear the tread to nothing before the bond fails. This makes them far more reliable than press-fit or mechanically attached tread designs that can slip or detach under heavy or shock loading.

The trade-off is weight — polyurethane on cast iron wheels are the heaviest in the polyurethane family. For applications under 1,000 lbs per wheel where push/pull force is a priority, aluminum-core or ergonomic polyurethane options may be more appropriate.
